We headed out of town this morning and had gone about 15 kms. and came to an abrupt stop when the temperature light on Corinne’s bike lit up. Hmmm…. That’s not good. So we turned around, headed back to town and stopped at a service station to check the fluid level. It looked good. The engine and hoses were very hot, but the radiator was cold. There were also signs of a leak from the water pump. Ugh!
A young chap at the service station drew us a detailed map directing us to a motorcycle repair shop a few blocks away and we headed there. Although the language barrier was a problem, we were able to explain and show the owner what was happening. Duane suspected the water pump as there appeared to be no circulation and the shop owner agreed. The mechanic phoned the BMW dealer in Buenos Aires to ask if they could courier a water pump overnight, and was told they don’t stock water pumps. If we really need one it must come from Germany! That will take about 2 months!! This is shaping up to be really bad.
After talking with the BMW technician in Buenos Aires, we were told that the water pump can be disassembled and the problem diagnosed. Possibly there are parts that can be replaced inside the unit. The shop would try to pull it apart that afternoon.
Back to the hotel we went, to enjoy another day in Puerto Madryn. We had been in many towns on this trip and were thankful that we were stuck in Puerto Madryn on the ocean instead of one of the other “interesting” places. Here we can have more seafood and enjoy the ocean setting and beautiful weather.
Later that afternoon we found out the water pump was fine, but the shaft was scored and the seal shot. A new shaft could be machined and the seal was available. Of course this would take some time.
Even though it is 25 degrees, it is too early in the morning for the beach crowd at 8:00 am. Not for me, the peace and tranquility of the empty beach was refreshing!
Of course we had to have pizza at the Lizard Cafe.
