Perito Moreno Glacier

Perito Mereno Glacier was on our must do list, but we skipped it on the way to Ushuaia due to being tired of gravel roads and short of time. The more we thought about it, the more we realized we could not go home without seeing it. So today was the day.

We awoke to a mostly overcast sky and were a bit disappointed but later in the day the clouds broke up. The contrasting light actually enhanced the appearance of the glacier and highlighted the blueness of the ice.

As we rounded a corner on the twisty mountain road and the glacier came into view for the first time, the sight took our breath away. We were still about 15 kms away and weren’t expecting to see it yet and weren’t prepared for its grandeur.

The pictures speak for themselves, but a picture cannot show a wall of ice 3 kilometres wide by 175 feet high. You must see it up close and personal.

And then it was back to El Calafate.
