The Hand

We were up early and ready to go by 8:30, but we waited while the hotel staff ran down the street to the “Lavado” to find Corinne’s missing Horizons Unlimited t-shirt from yesterday’s laundry. At 9:00 we left without the t-shirt, leaving our address and asking that they mail it to us – yeah right!

We headed west to Antofagasta expecting to see the damage of the severe earthquake that hit here in mid-November. We saw nothing more than one street in a new area of town that was closed due to heaving which might have been the result of the earthquake or just poor workmanship by the paving company.

After we left Antofagasta we were riding along thinking how barren the countryside is when all of a sudden Corinne shouted in the CB “hey look, it’s the hand”. We had both read about this structure but had forgotten where it was located. It’s in the middle of no where just sitting there. Very strange.

This area of Chile is called the Atacama Desert, and it was boring and hot, so there’s not much to say about today’s ride.

We made it to the town of Chanaral on the coast and ate seafood while the sun set over the ocean. Ahhhhh…… Lucy would have loved it.
