Carratera Austral

Starting south on the Carratera Austral, we drove about 450 kms, to the only town of any size on this section of the “highway” – Coyhaique. The road was a one-lane, rough, dusty, gravel road.

Blind corners made us nervous as many young, and even some more experienced drivers seemed unconcerned that a vehicle might be approaching from the opposite direction. A few times we thought that if we had been in a 4-wheeler, we would have collided.

The scenery on the first section of the road wasn’t what we expected of the Carratera Austral. Obviously we weren’t far enough south yet to see the spectacular mountain scenery we heard and read about. (This also re-confirms that we Albertans live in one of the most beautiful places in the world.) Hopefully tomorrow will see the rewards for our aching muscles.

The scenery improved tremendously the further south we went.

One beautiful aspect of this road was the wildflowers. In one area they were big bushes with yellow blossoms, and further south they were tall purple flowers. Through the dust and in spite of our helmet shields, we enjoyed the aroma as we drove by, like sticking our noses into a bouquet of lilacs.

We arrived at Coyhaique at dusk.
