Another trip back to the airport. More confusion about what needed to be done to get the bikes released. We spent the morning there, and were again put on hold until we could obtain proof of John’s death. This is getting really frustrating! Another email to the Embassy and a return to the waiting game.
We decided to take advantage of the free afternoon and do some sightseeing. Our Fodor’s book said that if we have 1 day in Lima we should go to the Plaza de Armas and the Iglesia de San Francisco (the Church of Francis). We went there straight from the airport. What a treat that was. The church was a collection of absolutely stunning architecture, beautiful carvings and statues. We toured the catacombs under the Church where some 75,000 people lay buried. Many of their bones have been sorted and laid back in the tombs for viewing. Earthquakes did not destroy the building because of the water wells which absorbed the movement. However, the walls of the wells have since broken through to expose 10 metres depth of more bones.
A walking tour around the area which is the original centre of Lima was awe inspiring. The cleanliness of the granite streets (you could almost see your reflection in them) the architecture and the character has u, taking a multitude of pictures and enjoying the day.
Suddenly we realized we were both extremely tired and hungry. One can forget all about those things when one is completely absorbed in the moment. Hailing a cab we headed back to our temporary home for another fine meal of tacu tacu and camarones. That was enough for today, we were bagged.
